How To Build A Raspberry Retro Pie Gaming Set

By Walter Hall

Since the invention of the computer, tech entrepreneurs from all over the world have designed and sold tons of models. While most computers in the market are widely used in commercial and corporate circles, there is only one model that has managed to hit the mark for computer hobbyists. The Raspberry Pi computer gives you the power to learn more by tweaking it to perform in whichever manner you desire. If you have always desired to relive the good old days of computer arcade games, here is a guide to turning your device into a Raspberry Retro Pie gaming set.

Before you get started, ensure you have got all the hardware you need. The first piece of hardware required is a Raspberry Pi computer chip. This should not cost much as a new set often goes for 35 dollars. Next, you have to activate the network interface of the computer to allow it to connect to the internet.

If you bought an old model, it most likely does not have a preconfigured network interface. You should purchase it separately and do the installation on the machine. Truth be told, this is an excellent way to enhance your practical hardware knowledge. Also make sure you include a case that can provide good cover for the integrated circuit in your purchase. In essence, your overall bill should not exceed 50 bucks.

With the network finally functional, shift your focus to the software part. For gaming purposes, you will have to download the Retro Pie image on an alternate machine, presumably one that is Windows based. Raspberry Pi computers do not come with internal hard drives.

For the image to run on your new machine, a micro SD card will be necessary. The downloaded image has many preinstalled packages that will help you run all the vintage games you like. Before clicking the download button, choose a version that has been tested to work with your computer model.

For your SD card to be compatible with your Pi computer, you have got to format it. Select FAT32 as the desired file format. This is best accomplished using Windows machines. Once formatted, leave the card attached to its slot.

You still have to install the image you downloaded inside it. To turn your SD card into a booting platform, download a highly reviewed imaging program from the internet. Good imaging programs are those that come with a graphical user interface that gives you an easy time selecting the destination for the image to be installed, in this case the attached SD card.

Thereafter, unplug the configured card and insert it into your Pi. Gather your gaming peripherals and insert them in their rightful ports. Restart the machine then choose the game you want to play from the user interface that Retro Pie brings up. Next, follow the displayed instructions step by step.

Do not forget that many vintage games are guarded by copyright laws. However, the image has got preinstalled games for users to try. During the set up, choose the controls that you will use. It could be a keyboard or gamepad.
